Financial Aid from the Federal Government

AWARD YEAR: July 1st, 2023 to June 30th, 2024

Most students are eligible to receive financial aid from the federal government to help pay for college or career school. Your age, race, or field of study won’t affect your eligibility for federal student aid. While your income is taken into consideration, it does not automatically prevent you from getting federal student aid.

***If you are applying to the March or May classes: When you are filling out the 2023 - 2024 FAFSA, you will need to fill out your 2024-2025 FAFSA (if available) as well. Your (and your parent's if you're under the age of 24) 2020 income taxes will be needed***

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed in order to apply for any of the following Financial Aid programs. The FAFSA application, along with information from your 2021 tax return will determine your eligibility for Federal Grant money and Stafford Student and Parent PLUS loans.

Award amount will be based on Expected Family Contribution (EFC) that is determined after FAFSA is completed and submitted. You can view your EFC on your Student Aid Report that you will receive once you submit your FAFSA. The FAFSA will classify you as either an independent or dependent student.

Independent students are one or more of the following:

  • at least 24 years old
  • married
  • a graduate or professional student
  • a veteran
  • a member of the armed forces
  • an orphan
  • a ward of the court
  • or someone with legal dependents other than a spouse, an emancipated minor or someone who is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Any students who do not meet the criteria above will be classified as a dependent student and will require your parent’s tax information to complete the FAFSA.

FEDERAL PELL GRANT

The FAFSA application, along with information from your 2021 tax return (and your parents if you are under the age of 24) will determine your eligibility for Federal Grant money and Direct Student and Parent Plus loans. The maximum award is $7,395 for the 2023- 2024 award year. Additional household information may be required to establish eligibility fully.

STUDENT LOANS

Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans are federal student loans for eligible students to help cover the cost of higher education at a four-year college or university, community college, or trade, career, or technical school. The U.S. Department of Education offers eligible students at participating schools Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans. (Some people refer to these loans as Stafford Loans or Direct Stafford Loans.)

Direct Subsidized Loan

  • Based on need, not credit history or income
  • The Financial Aid Office determines the amount you can borrow
  • The borrowed amount must not exceed your financial need
  • The U.S. Department of Education pays the interest on a Direct Subsidized Loan
  • Fixed Interest rate of 4.99% for the life of the loan
  • Repayment can begin no later than 6 months after graduating
  • Loans are in student’s name only

Direct Unsubsidized Loan

  • Not based on need, credit history or income
  • The Financial Aid Office determines the amount you can borrow
  • Fixed interest rate of 4.99% for the life of the loan
  • You are responsible for paying the interest of this loan during all periods.
  • Repayment can begin no later than six months after you graduate
  • Loans are in student’s name only

Parent PLUS Loan

Parent PLUS loans are federal loans that graduate or professional students and parents of dependent undergraduate students can use to help pay for college or career school. Enables parents with qualifying credit to borrow from the Government to help with education expenses for their dependent student. Loan amounts vary with qualification.

  • Will require a credit check and not have an adverse credit history
  • Fixed interest rate of 7.54% for the life of the loan
  • If you are a parent borrower, you’ll generally be expected to start making payments on your Direct PLUS Loan once your loan is fully disbursed (paid out)
  • Loans are in parent’s name only

OTHER FINANCING OPTIONS

NO INTEREST MONTHLY payments.

  • Payments are broken into six monthly payments of $2,650.
  • All tuition payments are due the 1st or 1st Monday of each month. The cost of attendance ($15,990) must be paid in full to the school before the diploma will be issued
